This is How the Color Orange Inspires You to Be Yourself

Posted on

And the celebration of my birthday continues! Today is all about numero uno….and my favorite color: orange.

In my unscientific poll of asking random strangers on the internet, most people don't particularly like the color orange. They don't mind the fruit, but to have it in their house or even to wear it, not so much.

But did you know the color orange can help you feel, act, and become unapologetically YOU? The power of color!

Next up in the Boost Your ‘Tude series, we’ll concentrate on this citrusy hue. It’s the color of happiness, creativity, and energy.

Orange you glad to be here?!

Why the Color Orange Inspires You to Be Yourself

Have you ever walked away from a conversation and thought, “Wow! Who was I just then?!”

When you’re home and cozy in your environment, it’s easy to be yourself. But, in social situations, you might lose yourself a bit.

Will Eminem ever be irrelevant? I don’t think so.

It's not as easy to be witty when you're in an unfamiliar environment. And that funny zinger only comes to you long after the conversation ends.

I get it! My best lines come to me in the shower. And let me say, they would have had everyone in stitches.

If you've ever held yourself back to get by, to fit in, you might have realized that in doing so, you checked your creativity and uniqueness at the door.

From personal experience, I can say learning how to be your authentic self is a gradual process of baby steps, morning meditations, and positive self-talk. But, it’s totally possible -- no matter where you are or who you’re with.

My first step in embracing my authentic self? Jumping feet first in love with a color I had been afraid of most my life - orange.

Orange you glad you're reading this post?

Okay, I promise, puns stop here...

Frank Sinatra Quote - Orange is the happiest color.

Orange 101 -
Energy, Positivity, and Life

What two colors are combined to create orange? I know, elementary school was a long time ago for me too.

Red and yellow create orange and depending on how intense of an orange I’m trying to create, I’ll either add more red or more yellow.  If I’m trying to create a shade of pumpkin orange, I’ll add more red than yellow. If I’m looking to create a more vibrant orange, say a tangerine hue, I’ll add more yellow.

In psychology terms, red is the color of passion and determination, amongst other things. And yellow is the color of happiness.
So Frank had it wrong.

So, whenever you’re feeling blue (pun intended), orange can add energy, enthusiasm, and excitement to your life.

And if you think about it, orange is everywhere you look. A spectacular sunset, the burst of tang after taking a bite of a tangerine, pumpkin fields, and falling leaves...

Orange is Not Your Color

I’m not too positive when I decided orange was for me -- sometime after college probably. At the time, I was a brunette, and I thought the color accented my hair. And for as long as I could remember, I had been told that yellow and orange weren’t good colors for me. You’ve probably heard the same thing, but I decided to own the fact that I liked the color. And so it was.

I started with small objects; a spoon rest for my oven, a bath towel, underwear. Once I started seeing the color orange in my surroundings, I jumped in with both feet; nail polish, a top, a pair of shoes.

When I wear a bold shade of orange, I feel vibrant, happy, and seen. Crazy enough, in the city where most people won’t say hello, strangers will stop me and say some version of, “Oh wow! I love that color of orange on you! I’d never be brave enough to wear it!”

Anyone CAN wear orange. Too hard to find the perfect hue to compliment your hair and skin tone?

A Pinch of Passion + Happiness = Authenticity

passion plus happiness equals authenticity

There are so many shades of orange! Way more than 50, Anastasia.

If orange feels a bit much to you, find a way to add small doses of the color to your everyday life, even if it’s an orange colored pen (my favorite is linked below). Or a pillow, a tape dispenser, or a pair of stud earrings. Below, you’ll find a roundup of my favorite orange things. Cause, it’s my birthday and I can orange if I want to...
