Treat yourself. You've likely heard it a time or two and know the drill -- have a glass of wine, take a bubble bath, get a facial, read a good book, la-di-frickin-da.
That’s all fine and dandy when your goal is to create the perfect picture for Instagram. But what if you’re on a serious downward spiral and need a pick-me-up that packs a punch?
If you’re keeping up with my Boost Your ‘Tude series, you know I believe color can have a powerful effect on your mood. How a red dress can make you feel confident and sexy. Or the blue waters of the ocean can bring on feelings of peace and bliss.
And the color purple? Well, Prince says it best...
Purple Reigns, Purple Reigns
In ancient times, creating dyes to color fabric was time-consuming and expensive, and since the color purple rarely occurs in nature, it was even harder to come by. That’s why purple has become a sign of wealth and royalty.
Regal, sensual, and soothing -- you either love it or hate it. However you swing, the color is the key to calming your nerves while uplifting your spirits. In fact, in Chakra colors, purple is the Crown Chakra, governing the mind, nervous system, and brain.
So, how do you use the color purple when you forget to focus on yourself and need some self-care?
Well, first things first, don’t forget to focus on yourself!
Treat yourself isn’t a hashtag trend.
Okay, it is, but that’s social media for ya because it’s ALSO something you need to do every day. Because if you don’t take care of yourself, you won't be here for your next birthday, recital, promotion, or vacation.
The most important thing to remember is that busy-ness is not an excuse. If you run yourself into the ground, you’re no longer productive at work, or you can’t pay attention to your kids. The better you take care of yourself, the better you can take care of those you love.
Okay… :steps off soapbox:
Dress Like a Royal, Feel Like a Royal
Back to the color purple. Dress for the job you want. Or, in this case, the mood you want. The various shades of purple can have a different effect. For example...
A light shade of purple is great for feminine energy, romantic, or nostalgic feelings.
A bold, true purple is associated with richness, rank, and influence.
A darker shade represents intellect, dignity, and wisdom.
But, dressing like a royal isn’t the only thing you can do to treat yourself like a Queen every day. Here are a few of my favorite, non-Instagrammable but super effective ways to boost my ‘tude.
Put Yourself First For a Little While
I’m really passionate about women remembering to put themselves first sometimes. For me, caring for myself is more of a mental health thing. When I’m stressed, it can be easy to fall off the bandwagon of healthy, conscious habits.
So, even turning off the tv at night, ignoring my phone, and spending time with myself (regardless of what’s going on or if I’ll miss my favorite show) can make all the difference.
Go to the Movies By Yourself
I like to treat myself extra kindly at the end of a stressful week. Instead of trying to do #allthethings I couldn’t do during the week, I go to the movies. It's one of my favorite things to do solo!
I don’t guilt trip myself about all the work I could get done in the three hours it takes to watch a film...I just watch the film! Novel idea, really.
Hit the Streets
Recently, I've taken to immediately changing into workout attire after work so I can pound the pavement.
One week, Fitbit told me I took 98,155 steps, and I was like OMG, I can totally beat that! It then became my goal to get to 100k steps a week. The competitive girl in me really kicked in, and I'm now very aware of how many steps I take in a day.
Cut Out the Sugar, Baby
I've stopped eating/drinking things with added sugar. I'm no stranger to a Reese's or a box of Hot Tamales, but I was seeing all the crap I was eating in an attempt to power through all the things and thought, damn, I gotta stop this.
I still put sugar in my coffee. And I eat ice cream on the weekends, but I don't have it in the house (preferably only one scoop a weekend, but you know).
Meditation, exercise, and healthy eating habits are my top three ways to take care of myself on the daily so I stay productive, focused, and happy.
No, these aren’t luxurious, easy things to do, but they work and when I take charge of my mental health, I feel like the Queen I really am. What about you?
