The organic and natural skincare industry is booming! Back in early 2017, after a food sensitivity test came back as being sensitive to many chemicals and dyes commonly found in my shampoo, body wash, and lotion, I began my search for more natural alternatives.
As many small business owners can attest, Facebook groups are a great way to connect with like-minded people. In one such group, I met Jackie, the CEO, and owner of Moxxie Essential Care, an evolving line of bath and body products which are gentle, hydrating, honestly scented and wonderfully textured - multi-purpose skincare products thoughtfully crafted from 100% plant-based ingredients.
Jackie is focused on the mission of promoting self-care through the daily rituals of whole body skin care. Moxxie’s commitment is to deliver effective skin care while supporting mind+body wellness - Unapologetic Self-Care. So take a break and read more about Jackie and Moxxie Essential Care.
How did Moxxie get started?
For most of my adult life, I worked as a project manager on the east coast developing mixed-income housing and creating strategies for corporate workplace design
In 1999, I moved to California and switched gears entirely to become the co-owner with my husband of an engineering-based manufacturing company specializing in producing wiring assemblies for companies building equipment, appliances, and vehicles. We’ve been doing that together for almost 20 years while raising two kids and it’s been quite a ride. All the while I yearned to reconnect with my creative roots in design.
A few years ago, I added Moxxie Essential Care to my life as a commitment to restart and honor my deeply rooted cravings to design - long deprived and woefully underutilized.
What drew you to the skincare industry?
For years I worked a lot with clay making pottery and set up a small studio in my home. I had also explored different food recipes and prepared meals for family and friends that I found in my ever-growing collection of cookbooks that drew me in with their eclectic ingredient combinations and deliciously engaging photographs. I had stopped doing both – not enough time, I told myself.
I started making cold processed soap after finding a stunning book on soap making while browsing in a bookstore. From the photographs, I could feel the textures and smell the fragrances of the soaps. I wanted to jump back into the creative process. The timing was right.
I am a creator at heart, a curious explorer, and life-long learner. I set out to learn the craft of soapmaking. Handcrafting small batch soaps from raw aromatic, colorful, textured plant ingredients is culinary at its core. I love that it is a practical artform - highly sensory and consumable. I knew it was the right fit for me.
As I have evolved the Moxxie brand, more than being in the skincare industry, I am focused on the mission of promoting self-care through the daily rituals of whole body skin care. Moxxie’s commitment is to deliver effective skin care while supporting mind+body wellness - Unapologetic Self-Care.
What words would you use to describe Moxxie?
Perfectly imperfect. Strong yet nuanced. A mindful luxury. Smart, clean and modern. Moxxie is a reminder - a clarion call, to stop, breathe, pause and renew. A reminder, for women especially, to prioritize her self-care.
What inspires Moxxie?
Moxxie is inspired by people who live their lives unapologetically – with verve and colorful zest. Especially women who are transitioning into or are middle-aged. I am inspired by women who feel empowered enough by who they are to prioritize themselves and live in their joy. I get a kick out of women who know what they like and want more of it - women who celebrate their life journey and are leaning into the next chapter. I struggle with prioritizing this sometimes and I’ve found that many women struggle as well. Moxxie wants to be there for women with reaffirming products that deliver effective whole-body skin care and inspire daily moments of self-care.
If you could travel anywhere for inspiration, where would you go and why?
I am really interested in traveling to New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Brazil to experience the landscapes, cultures, sounds and physical environments. I want to soak in the energies and awaken my senses.
What small businesses inspire you and why?
I am inspired by businesses and business owners that have carved out a place in the market - sometimes as pioneers – against the odds and are maintaining solid principles and connection to their customer. I love creative, well-designed products and companies with positive energy and work environments that support their employee growth.
Q's About Jackie:
What brings you joy?
I love to travel, read a good book, share good food with friends, laughing, biking, sailing out on the ocean, walking in the rain, sitting in front of a fire on a cold overcast day, being at a concert, play, or comedy show.
What’s your favorite quote and who said it?
“I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival.” – Audre Lorde
What’s one thing you would eat if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life?
Wow. That’s a tough one. I really love anything chocolate, salted caramel or bacon but can’t imagine eating them every day. Soooo my “for the rest of my life” pick would be a fresh fruit salad made with apple, banana, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, cantaloupe, and avocado on a bed of mixed greens with chopped walnuts.
If that’s cheating on the answer…. My ONE thing might be sweet potatoes – great flavor, versatile and healthy.
What's your favorite ice cream flavor?
Hands down its Chocolate with Grand Marnier. I first tasted this flavor years ago in Cambridge, MA at a small indie ice cream shop that created amazing culinary ice cream flavors.
Do you have a favorite dish to cook?
Grilled salmon with steamed broccoli and baked sweet potatoes. Simple and satisfying.
What are you grateful for right now?
I am grateful for my health, my family, friends home and business. I am in a good place all things considered. I am grateful for opportunities I’ve been given and my awareness of the possibilities for my tomorrow.
You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be and why?
My color would be some kind of blend between olive and iguana green – the Moxxie Green. I am attracted to the green colors that carry yellow undertones.
What was the last gift you gave someone?
I recently gave two of my very dear friends a hanging bedside pouch. It’s great for keeping a journal, iPad or book and reading glasses within reach.
What’s the last thing you watched on TV and why did you choose to watch it?
Law & Order - the original series. I am a committed fan of the show’s beginning and can never get enough.
A penguin walks through that door right now wearing a sombrero. What does she say and why is she here?
If she walks into the Moxxie studio she might say…. “I hear you are looking for an unflappable assistant and I’m your candidate as long as I can wear business casual”.
